The Perseids: When and How to Watch
Late on the night of August 12, something starts crossing the sky out of the northeast, coming from a patch of stars below Cassiopeia. It happens every year, on schedule, and it happens on a warm night, which is the whole reason so many people have actually seen this one and not the others. That is the Perseids, and it is worth doing right.
When the Perseids are active and when they peak
Our own sky map lists the Perseids running from July 17 through August 24, with the peak falling on the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13. That matches the International Meteor Organization's 2026 calendar almost exactly, which puts the maximum at August 13, somewhere between 02:00 and 04:00 UT. Both sources also agree on the rate at the peak: a zenithal hourly rate, or ZHR, of 100. This is one of the rare cases in this shower library where our page's own numbers and the outside record line up cleanly, so there is no correction to make here, just a peak to plan for.
No, the Perseids are not the year's richest shower
They get called the best meteor shower of the year constantly, and that claim is wrong if richest is what you mean. The Geminids in December run a ZHR of 150. The Quadrantids in early January run about 120, not the 110 you will sometimes see quoted, including in an older version of this shower record. Both beat the Perseids' 100. What the Perseids actually have is timing: a high radiant, a long comfortable stream of warm nights, and no need to stand outside in January cold at 3 a.m. just to prove a point. The American Meteor Society says it outright: Perseids are the most popular shower, not the strongest one. Popularity and rate are different measurements, and this is the one the marketing usually confuses.
Where the meteors actually come from
The Perseids are debris shed by comet 109P Swift-Tuttle, a chunk of ice and rock on a roughly 130-year orbit that last passed close to the sun in 1992. Earth plows through the trail it has left behind every August. That is a real distinction worth holding onto, because the two showers that do outrank the Perseids in rate, the Geminids and the Quadrantids, both come from asteroids instead of comets. Meteor showers are not all comet debris, and the two richest ones on the calendar are the proof.
What a ZHR of 100 actually promises, and why you will see far fewer
The IMO defines ZHR plainly: the number of meteors an ideal observer would count in a perfectly clear sky, with the radiant directly overhead, under a limiting magnitude of 6.5. That is a lot of conditions stacked on top of each other, and almost nobody gets all of them at once. A limiting magnitude of 6.5 sits at the very top edge of Bortle Class 4, the rural-to-suburban transition zone, which is already a better sky than most people have ever stood under. If you live somewhere with streetlights and a bit of haze, your practical limiting magnitude is lower, your radiant is rarely straight overhead, and your real count for the night will land well under 100 an hour, often closer to a third of that. It is still a good night. It is just not the number on the label.
Where to actually point your eyes
Perseus sits low in the northeast in the evening and climbs high overhead by the early morning hours, which is why the best viewing window runs from midnight until the first light of dawn. Do not stare at Perseus itself. Meteors radiating from that point look short and foreshortened near the radiant and get longer and more dramatic the farther away from it you look. Face any dark, open stretch of sky roughly forty to fifty degrees away from Perseus, ideally toward the zenith, and let your peripheral vision do the catching. IMO's 2026 forecast is good news here: the Perseid peak in 2026 falls on a moon-free night, so there is no lunar glow working against you the way there will be for some other showers this year.
What a fireball looks like, if you get lucky
Most Perseid meteors are quick, bright streaks. A minority leave a glowing trail behind them called a persistent train, sometimes visible for a full second or two after the meteor itself is gone. Rarer still is a fireball: a meteor dramatically brighter than the rest of the shower, sometimes bright enough to throw a shadow, that can leave people who saw it talking about it the next day. Swift-Tuttle debris runs relatively large and fast, which is part of why Perseid fireballs have a reputation.
What this means for you tonight
Open the sky map, find Perseus, and check what time it clears your local horizon rather than assuming midnight everywhere works the same. Then go out after midnight local time, give your eyes a real fifteen to twenty minutes away from any screen or porch light to adjust, and settle in facing a dark stretch of sky roughly halfway up, well off to the side of Perseus itself. Bring a blanket instead of a phone. The Perseids reward patience more than any piece of gear you could buy for this.
