The Geminids: When and How to Watch

Ask which meteor shower produces the most meteors in a given hour, and the honest answer is not the famous one. It is the Geminids, in mid-December, running a zenithal hourly rate of 150, the highest of any shower this sky map tracks. It also happens to come from an object that is not a comet at all.

When the Geminids run and peak

Our sky map lists the Geminids active December 4 through December 17, peaking the night of December 13 into the 14th. The International Meteor Organization's 2026 calendar names the peak as December 14, around 14h UT, which for most of North America falls during the daylight hours before dawn on the 14th, meaning the practical viewing window centers on the night of the 13th into the 14th, exactly what our page lists. The rates match too: both sources agree on a peak ZHR of 150. IMO describes the Geminids as "the best and most reliable of the major annual showers presently observable," with a broad maximum that sustains rates of 100 or more for ten to twelve hours rather than spiking and vanishing quickly.

The parent is a rock, not a comet

Most meteor showers trace back to a comet shedding ice and dust as it nears the sun. The Geminids do not. Their parent is 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid, sometimes described as a rock comet because it shows faint, comet-like activity near the sun despite its asteroid classification and orbit. This matters beyond trivia: the Geminids are one of exactly two showers on this calendar with an asteroidal rather than cometary parent, and they happen to be the two richest showers of the year. The Quadrantids in January, sourced from the asteroid 2003 EH1, are the other. Anyone telling you meteor showers come from comets, full stop, is describing most of the calendar but not its two best nights.

What a ZHR of 150 actually promises, and what you'll really see

Zenithal hourly rate describes what an ideal observer would count with the radiant directly overhead and skies dark enough to reach magnitude 6.5, the top edge of a rural to suburban transition sky. Almost no one gets both conditions simultaneously, so the real count runs lower, sometimes well under half the headline number depending on your sky and how high Gemini has climbed. Even discounted, 150 is high enough that the Geminids remain the most productive shower most observers will ever watch, and IMO's 2026 forecast lists the Geminid peak, like the Perseids, as falling on a moon-free night, removing one more source of interference.

Where to look, and why the radiant rides high all night

Gemini's radiant sits near Castor, and unlike showers whose radiant only clears the horizon late, Gemini is well placed for most of the night in mid-December, giving you a longer practical viewing window than a shower confined to the pre-dawn hours. Do not stare directly at Castor. Meteors near the radiant look short and foreshortened; the longer, more dramatic streaks appear thirty to fifty degrees away, so pick a dark patch of sky off to the side and let your peripheral vision do the work.

What the meteors look like once they arrive

Geminid meteors travel at a moderate 35 kilometers a second, slower than a Perseid or a Leonid, which gives each one a longer, more visible path across the sky. Many appear with a distinct yellowish or greenish tint, and the shower produces a good number of bright meteors alongside its steady background of fainter ones.

What this means for you tonight

Because the Geminid peak is broad rather than a single sharp hour, you have real flexibility: any clear stretch of the night of December 13 into the 14th will do, and you do not need to force yourself out of bed at a specific minute. Dress for December cold rather than August warmth, since this is the shower where people most often quit early not because the meteors stopped but because they got too cold to stay outside.
