Vela: The Sails

Vela is missing something every other constellation has. Look at its brightest stars and you'll find a Gamma and a Delta, but no Alpha, no Beta. That's not an oversight. It's the leftover paperwork from one of the biggest reorganizations in the history of constellation-mapping.

A ship too big for one constellation

Vela represents the sails of Argo Navis, the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts in Greek myth. For centuries Argo Navis was a single enormous constellation, one of the largest in the sky. In the 1750s, Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille split it into three separate, more manageable pieces: Carina for the ship's keel, Puppis for the stern, and Vela for the sails.

When Lacaille divided Argo, he kept the original star-letter designations attached to the pieces as they'd already been assigned across the old, unified constellation. Carina and Puppis ended up with the Alpha and Beta designations. Vela kept whatever letters were left over from the old scheme, starting at Gamma. That's the entire explanation — not a myth, just how the bookkeeping fell out when one ancient constellation became three modern ones.

It's a small, useful reminder that the letters attached to stars aren't a ranking system handed down from antiquity. They're a labeling convention, applied once, and Vela is the clearest proof in the whole sky that the convention can produce gaps.

Lacaille was tidying up more than just Argo's oversized borders around the same time. His final catalogue, Coelum Australe Stelliferum, published after his death in 1763, carried out the three-way split of Argo Navis and, separately, quietly retired an entirely different constellation, Robur Carolinum, "Charles's Oak," which the astronomer Edmond Halley had invented decades earlier purely to flatter England's King Charles II. Vela survived that same round of housekeeping because, unlike Halley's tribute, it described something that had already been sailing through star charts for two thousand years under one unified name.

The stars that do the work here

Vela's brightest star is Gamma Velorum, at magnitude 1.75, and it's a genuinely strange object: a hot multiple star system containing the brightest Wolf-Rayet star in the sky, a type of star shedding its outer layers in a fierce stellar wind. It also carries the informal name Regor. Close behind it is Alsephina, formally Delta Velorum, at magnitude 1.96 — a bright white eclipsing binary, a pair of stars that periodically pass in front of each other from our point of view and dim as they do.

Both stars are bright enough to be genuinely satisfying naked-eye targets, no telescope required to notice them standing out from the surrounding field. That's not always true of far-southern constellations, plenty of which hide behind stars barely above magnitude 4. Vela earns its visibility honestly, on the strength of two stars that would be notable wherever they sat in the sky.

What's riding through the sails

Vela sits in a rich stretch of the southern Milky Way, and it holds three deep-sky objects that are each worth knowing on their own. The Vela Supernova Remnant is the wispy, tattered wreckage of a star that exploded roughly 11,000 years ago — the visible aftermath still expanding outward. The Eight-Burst Nebula, catalogued as NGC 3132 and nicknamed the Southern Ring, is a bright planetary nebula, the kind of glowing shell a star sheds near the end of its life. And the Gum Nebula is an enormous, faint emission nebula spread across a huge patch of sky, far more diffuse and harder to pick out than the other two.

Three objects, three different stages of a star's life and death, sitting in the same small stretch of sky. A planetary nebula and a supernova remnant are both aftermaths, but very different ones — one a gentle shedding of outer layers, the other a violent, one-time event. Having both inside a single constellation, alongside a nebula as large and faint as Gum, makes Vela worth returning to more than once.

What this means for you tonight

Vela is a southern-hemisphere constellation with March as its best month, riding through the Milky Way alongside the other two pieces of the old ship: Carina and Puppis. If you're trying to piece the original Argo Navis back together in your head, those three posts are worth reading together — the ship makes a lot more sense as three parts than as one impossibly large shape. Since Gamma Velorum and Alsephina are both bright, first-magnitude-range stars, Vela is a relatively forgiving target even under some light pollution, though the fainter Gum Nebula will need a darker sky to show up at all.
