How to Use the Real Sky Map: A Complete Walkthrough
Real Sky is a live simulation, not a photo or an illustration. It draws 8,920 real stars, all 88 constellations, ten solar system bodies, and thirteen meteor showers for a real place and a real moment, and it computes an actual astrological chart on top of that same data. Every control described below changes what you are actually seeing, not a cosmetic filter over it. Here is what each one does and how they work together.
The default view is tonight's sky over New York
When the page first loads, the simulated clock is running at real time and the observer location is set to New York, at 40.7128 north and negative 74.006 west. The star field itself is capped at magnitude 6.5, which is the practical limit of what the human eye can register in a genuinely dark sky and is also the cutoff built into the underlying star catalog. That single number matters more than it looks: it means the map is showing you a best-case dark-sky view, not what you would see from a porch in a lit-up suburb.
The little clock readout at the top of the controls shows the simulated weekday, date, and time in your device's locale, and a second readout shows the current observer label with latitude and longitude to two decimal places. Both update live while the simulation runs.
How to move the sky forward and backward in time
The controls panel gives you several ways to change when you are looking, covered in full in the dedicated walkthrough of the time controls. Tonight jumps straight back to the current real moment and resumes playback at normal speed. My birth sky jumps to your saved birth date and time and pauses there, and it stays disabled until you have actually entered a birth date. Next birthday jumps forward to the next calendar occurrence of your birth month and day, also paused.
Below those, a birth date and time field lets you set your own birth moment, stored in your browser rather than sent anywhere, and a separate jump to any moment field works like a general time machine, letting you scrub to any date you want. A play and pause button starts and stops the simulated clock, and four speed presets sit next to it: live real time, one simulated minute per real second, one simulated hour per second, and one simulated day per second. Setting the sky to run a day per second is genuinely one of the more striking ways to watch the whole zodiac wheel turn.
Setting where you are standing
Two number fields let you type an exact latitude and longitude, each committing when you click away from the field, and the location label switches to Custom once you do. A use my location button asks your browser for geolocation permission and relabels the observer accordingly. This is the field that determines your horizon, so if you want to know what's actually rising in your sky right now rather than New York's, this is the one to change first. The layer toggles control what's drawn, not just what's visible
Six toggles switch entire data layers on and off: constellations turns the stick-figure linework and its click targets on or off, names shows or hides the constellation name labels, zodiac band shows the ecliptic great circle with its twelve sign glyphs, planet labels adds name sprites under each solar system body, meteor showers draws the streaks and radiant markers for any shower currently active, and chart shows or hides the astrological chart panel itself. On narrower screens the chart and name toggles default to off simply to keep the view uncluttered; nothing about the underlying data changes.
Clicking things opens cards, and only one at a time
Click a planet or the Sun or Moon and you either open a full-screen close observation or a small info card, depending on your device's rendering tier. Click a zodiac glyph on the ecliptic band and you get a sign card showing its meaning, element, modality, traditional ruler, and which planets currently sit in that sign. Click a constellation figure or its name label and you get the lore card: translation, hemisphere, best viewing month, brightest stars, deep-sky objects, and either its myth or its real modern origin story. Click an active meteor shower's radiant and you get a shower card with live countdown-style timing, the peak ZHR, and the parent body. Opening any of these closes whatever else was open, and clicking empty sky dismisses everything at once.
Two ways to just watch
Sky tour is a slow, passive camera sweep around the horizon that takes about ninety seconds per full revolution; any drag or scroll ends it immediately and it never restarts on its own. Cinematic reading is a different thing entirely, and it gets its own full walkthrough at the cinematic reading breakdown: it freezes time and plays a directed sequence built from tonight's actual sky, starting wide, moving through the Moon's phase and placement, the tightest current aspects, any active retrogrades, your rising sign's patch of horizon, and the strongest active meteor shower's radiant, before closing back out wide. Every caption in that sequence is pulled from the same interpretation data as the chart panel, nothing is invented on the fly. Both modes automatically disable if your system has requested reduced motion.
Asteroid watch is the only thing on this page that calls out to the internet
Every other feature runs entirely on data already loaded in your browser. Asteroid watch, covered in detail at the asteroid watch and Observe mode guide, is the exception: it's an opt-in panel that fetches near-Earth object close approaches for the next seven days from NASA's own asteroid-tracking service. It exists as a text readout rather than a 3D object in the sky for a simple reason: real near-Earth asteroids are around magnitude 20, thousands of times fainter than anything the naked-eye star field renders, so there is nothing honest to draw.
What this means for you tonight
Set your location first, then your birth date and time, and leave both alone once your chart looks right. The natal and transit math both use whatever location is currently loaded as the observer, not a geocoded birth city, so changing your lat and lon after you've saved a birth time will quietly shift your rising sign and every house placement without warning. Once it's set, open the full chart panel, tap Your transits, and see which of tonight's real planetary positions are making a tight aspect back to your own chart. If it says the sky is quiet, that's the actual math, not a placeholder.
