Volans: The Flying Fish

Volans is small, faint, and easy to walk right past. But the name is one of the more literal in the sky: Dutch navigators genuinely watched fish leap clear of the water to escape predators on their long voyages south, and they put that exact behavior into the stars. It's a quieter kind of naming than most of the sky gets, and worth pausing on for that reason alone.

Sailors naming what they actually saw

This constellation comes from the same 1590s voyages that gave us Tucana and Triangulum Australe — Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman charting the deep southern sky from shipboard. They originally called it Piscis Volans, the flying fish, after a real fish that leaps from the water to escape predators, something sailors on long ocean crossings would have actually witnessed firsthand. There's no ancient myth here. It's a direct, practical name for a real animal behavior, given by people who'd seen it.

Volans sits tucked up against the much larger constellation Carina, itself one of the three pieces the old ship Argo Navis was split into. There's a nice logic to the placement even if it wasn't deliberate: a small fish, leaping alongside the hull of a great ship.

That's a pattern worth noticing across this whole batch of Dutch-named constellations. Rather than reaching for gods or heroes, Keyser and de Houtman named what they'd genuinely watched happen around their own ship — birds, fish, water creatures — and mapped those observations onto blank sky nobody had claimed a name for yet.

De Houtman, who observed independently on the same voyage and a later one, published his own southern star catalogue in 1603 — the version the rival cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu drew on for his own globes. Keyser and de Houtman share credit today as a pair, even though they never worked from one shared master list; their two independent readings of the same southern sky were merged after the fact by the mapmakers who turned raw star positions into these twelve constellations.

The stars, and a small correction worth making

It would be easy to assume the brightest star in Volans is called Alpha Volantis, the way it works in most constellations. It isn't. The brightest star here is Gamma Volantis, an orange giant at magnitude 3.62. Right behind it is Beta Volantis, also an orange giant, at magnitude 3.77 — close in brightness, close in type, and easy to mix up if you're not checking a chart. That naming quirk alone is worth knowing before you go hunting, so you're not stuck wondering why an Alpha star never shows up on the map.

Both are modest stars. Volans isn't a constellation you find by scanning for something bright; you find it by knowing roughly where to look, near Carina, and working out the small fish-shaped pattern from there. Checking a real chart rather than guessing from memory matters more here than it does with a bright, obvious shape, precisely because Gamma and Beta Volantis are close enough in brightness to be genuinely confusing without one.

The distorted galaxy tucked inside it

Beyond the stars, Volans holds NGC 2442, nicknamed the Meathook Galaxy for its lopsided shape — a distorted spiral with two very different arms, one long and hooked, the other short and stubby. That asymmetry usually points to a gravitational disturbance from a close pass with another galaxy at some point in its history. It's a telescope target, not a naked-eye one, but a genuinely strange-looking object once you find it.

Most spiral galaxies look reasonably symmetrical when you get a clear view of them, two or more arms winding out in roughly matching curves. The Meathook breaks that pattern outright, which is exactly what makes it worth the search once you're already out with a scope pointed at this part of the sky.

What this means for you tonight

Volans is a southern-hemisphere constellation with February as its best month, and it's the kind of target worth planning for rather than stumbling across by accident. It sits right alongside Carina in the sky — find Carina's brighter stars first, then look for the smaller flying fish pattern nearby.
