Leo Minor: The Lesser Lion
There is no myth attached to Leo Minor, and honestly, the real story is more interesting than a myth would be. Its brightest star was simply forgotten by the person doing the paperwork, and the omission stuck for good.
Leo Minor is a gap-filler, not an ancient figure
Johannes Hevelius drew Leo Minor in 1687, working the way most of the modern constellations came about: he looked at the sky, found a patch nobody had claimed, and drew a shape into it. The patch he found sits wedged between two much bigger, much older neighbors, Leo and Ursa Major, and the little lion he sketched there has no classical legend behind it at all. Hevelius named plenty of the sky's blank spaces this way, and Leo Minor is one of the smaller, dimmer results.
That makes Leo Minor part of a group of 38 constellations on this sky map with no Greco-Roman myth attached, entries where the honest story is who invented the shape and when, not which god did what to whom.
Its brightest star has no Alpha, and that was a mistake
Every constellation is supposed to get its brightest star labeled Alpha, its second brightest Beta, and on down the Greek alphabet. Leo Minor's brightest star, an orange giant called Praecipua (46 Leonis Minoris, magnitude 3.83), never got that label. The cataloguer responsible, Francis Baily, simply skipped it when he was assigning Greek letters across the sky in the 1800s.
The result is a small, quiet joke inside the star catalogs: Leo Minor's one and only Greek-lettered star is Beta Leonis Minoris, magnitude 4.21, even though it is dimmer than Praecipua. Beta is not the brightest star here. Praecipua is, by a comfortable margin, and it carries a name instead of a letter because of one cataloguer's oversight.
It is easy to see how a star this faint slipped through. Nobody was cataloging every star in the sky by hand in a single afternoon. Assigning Greek letters constellation by constellation, across thousands of stars, meant one missed brightest star in one small, unglamorous patch of sky was never going to jump out as an error until someone went back and checked the actual numbers years later.
A third star spins fast enough to matter
Rounding out Leo Minor's short list of visible stars is 21 Leonis Minoris, magnitude 4.48, a white star known for spinning unusually fast. That is three stars in total on this sky map's Leo Minor entry, and none of them reach even magnitude 3. This is a dim constellation by any measure, one you will not stumble across by accident the way you might with Orion or the Big Dipper.
Leo Minor carries no deep-sky objects on this map either. It is a constellation built almost entirely out of the fact that Hevelius needed to fill the space, plus one genuinely funny cataloging slip.
That absence of a deep-sky showpiece is worth naming plainly, rather than glossing over. Some constellations on this map earn a visit because of a galaxy or a nebula tucked inside them. Leo Minor earns its visit because of what did not happen when the letters were handed out, which is a different, quieter kind of interesting.

Leo Minor is a northern-hemisphere constellation, best placed for viewing in April. Its location is the easiest thing about it: it sits in the gap between Leo, the real lion with its unmistakable backward-question-mark Sickle, and the bowl of the Big Dipper in Ursa Major. Find those two shapes first on the sky map, then look at the quiet stretch of stars between them, and you are looking at Leo Minor.
Do not expect a bright showpiece. At magnitude 3.83, Praecipua is visible to the naked eye from a reasonably dark backyard, but it will not jump out at you the way a first-magnitude star does.
