Leo: The Lion
Most constellations ask you to use your imagination. Leo does not. The curved hook of stars called the Sickle really does read as a crouching lion's head and mane, and once you have traced it, the rest of the animal, tail and all, falls into place easily.
The Sickle is the mane, and one star in it does something the others do not
Regulus, Algieba, Denebola, and Zosma are Leo's four brightest stars. Regulus is a blue-white star, and its name literally means "the little king," which fits since it sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, the path the Sun, Moon, and planets all appear to travel across the sky. Algieba is actually a golden pair of giant stars sitting close together in the Sickle, visible as a true double in a telescope. Denebola, a white star, marks the lion's tail, while Zosma, also white, sits on the hip.
Regulus's position on the ecliptic is not decorative. It means the Moon and planets regularly pass close to it or even in front of it, and ancient observers who tracked the sky for calendar and omen purposes would have noticed that conjunction constantly.
Three galaxies photograph together in one field of view
Leo hosts the Leo Triplet, a genuinely photogenic grouping of three galaxies, M65, M66, and NGC 3628, close enough together that astrophotographers frequently capture all three in a single shot. Nearby sits the M96 Group, a related cluster of galaxies that includes M95, M96, and M105.
Neither grouping is a naked-eye target, but for anyone with even a modest telescope pointed at a dark sky, Leo is one of the better regions of the northern spring sky to go galaxy hunting, precisely because so much is packed into one small patch.
The myth is about a lion no weapon could kill
In Greek myth, this is the Nemean Lion, a beast whose hide could not be pierced by any weapon. Heracles strangled it with his bare hands as the first of his twelve labors, then wore the lion's own invulnerable pelt as armor for the rest of his adventures. It is a fitting origin for a constellation whose brightest star translates to "little king."
The Babylonians had already named this pattern long before that myth took hold in Greece. They called it UR.GU.LA, the Great Lion, and its brightest star, Regulus, was known as the King Star, Sharru. That name carried forward: Regulus later became one of the four Royal Stars of Persia, a title given to bright stars marking the four cardinal points of the ancient sky.
The constellation Leo and the zodiac sign Leo are not the same object
This is worth being direct about. The zodiac sign called Leo, the one used in horoscopes and birth charts, is a fixed 30-degree slice of the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons rather than to these specific stars. The constellation Leo, the actual crouching lion described above, is a real, irregularly-sized region of sky defined by IAU boundaries.
Over thousands of years, a slow wobble in Earth's axis called precession, one full cycle takes roughly 26,000 years, has shifted the constellations out of alignment with the tropical zodiac's fixed calendar slices. The Sun's position among these actual stars on any given date has drifted well away from where it was when the zodiac's sign boundaries were first set. That does not mean anyone's sign "changed." It means the constellation and the sign have always been two different systems that happened to share a name and a rough starting point millennia ago. Where and when to look
Leo is a northern constellation, best seen in April, when the Sickle rides high in the evening sky and is easy to trace against a dark background.
What this means for you tonight
Look for a backwards question mark of stars in the spring evening sky. That hook shape is the Sickle, and the star at its base, brighter than the rest, is Regulus.
