Ursa Major: The Great Bear

Everyone can find the Big Dipper. Fewer people know it is only the brightest part of a much bigger figure, Ursa Major, the Great Bear, and that those seven familiar stars do actual, practical work if you know which two of them to watch.

The Big Dipper is seven stars, but only two of them matter for navigation

Alioth, Dubhe, and Alkaid are the three brightest stars in Ursa Major. Alioth is a white star and the brightest of the group. Dubhe is an orange giant, and Alkaid is a blue star at the tip of the Dipper's handle.

Dubhe matters for a specific reason beyond brightness. Along with the star next to it in the bowl, Dubhe is one of the Dipper's two Pointer stars. Draw a line through those two stars and extend it roughly five times their own separation, and you land almost exactly on Polaris, the north star anchoring the altitude and azimuth system every sky map is built on. Sailors, hikers, and pretty much every culture with clear night skies figured this out independently, because it is genuinely one of the most useful facts in naked-eye astronomy.

Three galaxies sit close enough together to hunt in one session

Ursa Major holds three notable galaxies that are worth learning together since they sit near each other in the sky. Bode's Galaxy, M81, is a bright grand-design spiral, the kind of picture-perfect pinwheel shape people imagine when they hear the word galaxy. Right beside it is the Cigar Galaxy, M82, an edge-on starburst galaxy that looks completely different through a telescope: a thin, glowing sliver instead of a disk.

Further off is the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, a large, face-on spiral that is bigger in apparent size than M81 but fainter overall. None of these are naked-eye targets, but they reward anyone stepping up to binoculars or a small scope, and knowing three deep-sky objects are clustered in the same patch of sky is a good reason to actually bring the equipment out.

The myth involves two bears, a jealous goddess, and a permanent grudge

Ursa Major is Callisto in Greek myth, a nymph loved by Zeus and turned into a bear by a jealous Hera. Zeus set her in the sky to keep her safe, and her son became the neighboring Little Bear, Ursa Minor, with the coiled length of Draco winding between the two bears. The seven brightest stars of Callisto's bear form the shape everyone actually recognizes: the Big Dipper, also called the Plough.

That shape is one of the most universally noticed patterns in the sky, and different cultures read it in ways that have nothing to do with Greek myth. Several Native American nations also saw a great bear in these stars. Across Europe it became the Plough or the Wagon, in England specifically it was Charles's Wain, and in China the same seven stars were read as a celestial ladle. It is worth sitting with that for a second: the shape is distinctive enough that unrelated cultures on different continents converged on strikingly similar or wildly different objects, all from the same seven points of light.

Where and when to look

Ursa Major is a northern constellation with April as its best month, when it rides high overhead in the evening. Because of its position near the pole, it is circumpolar for most of the northern United States and Europe, meaning it never fully sets and is visible for at least part of almost every clear night, year round. April is simply when it is highest and easiest to trace in full.

Locate the Big Dipper's bowl, then find the two stars that form its outer edge, farthest from the handle. Dubhe is the upper one of that pair.
