Gemini: The Twins

Gemini is headed by two bright stars close enough together that they read instantly as a pair, even to someone who has never traced a constellation before. That pairing is the whole point: this is the constellation of twins, and the two head-stars are literally named Castor and Pollux.

Pollux outshines Castor, and Castor is hiding a secret

Pollux, an orange giant, is the brighter of the two twin stars at magnitude 1.14, and it is also notable for having a known planet orbiting it, one of the relatively few naked-eye stars where that is confirmed. Castor, at magnitude 1.58, looks like a single star to the naked eye but is actually a system of six stars, gravitationally bound together and only resolvable as multiple points with a telescope and close attention. Alhena, a white subgiant, sits at Pollux's foot and rounds out the figure's brightest points.

It is a nice bit of irony that Castor, the star that looks perfectly ordinary and singular from the ground, is by far the more structurally complicated of the two once you actually look closely.

A cluster and a nebula that looks like a face in a hood sit near the twins' feet

M35, cataloged as NGC 2168, is a large, bright open cluster sitting near Castor's foot, dense with stars and an easy target for binoculars once you have located the twins themselves. Nearby is the Eskimo Nebula, NGC 2392, a planetary nebula whose shape genuinely resembles a face peering out from inside a fur-trimmed hood, a resemblance that gave the object its nickname long before anyone had a more neutral name for it.

The myth is about brothers who refused to be separated by death

Castor and Polydeuces, known to most people today as Pollux, were the Dioscuri, twin sons with one crucial difference: Pollux was immortal and Castor was not. When Castor was killed, Pollux begged to share his own immortality with his brother rather than live forever without him. Zeus granted the request in a particular way, setting the two together in the sky but having them alternate between the heavens and the underworld, so that neither brother is ever left permanently in one place without the other eventually joining him.

The Babylonians had already given this same pair of stars a name and a role long before that story took its familiar Greek shape. They knew the pair as the Great Twins, Meshlamtaea and Lugalirra, guardian gods stationed at the gateway to the underworld. Those names and that role sit directly underneath the later Greek constellation, which means the idea of paired guardian figures at these two stars predates Castor and Pollux by a considerable stretch.

The constellation Gemini and the zodiac sign Gemini are not the same thing

It is worth being direct about this. The zodiac sign Gemini, used in horoscopes and birth charts, is a fixed slice of the tropical zodiac tied to the calendar and the seasons. The constellation Gemini, the actual pair of twins described above, is a specific region of real sky with its own IAU-defined boundaries.

The same slow axial wobble, precession, that affects every zodiac constellation and takes roughly 26,000 years to complete a full cycle, has shifted the Sun's real position among these stars away from where it sat relative to the calendar when the zodiac's sign boundaries were first drawn. The sign has not changed and never gained a thirteenth member. It was always a separate system from the constellation, connected only by a shared name and an ancient starting point. Where and when to look

Gemini is a northern constellation, best seen in February, when it sits high and clear in the evening sky, not far from Orion.

What this means for you tonight

Look for two bright stars sitting close together, side by side rather than stacked, somewhere near Orion in the winter or early-spring evening sky. The slightly brighter of the two, closer to Orion's direction, is Pollux, and the one just beyond it is Castor, quietly hiding five more stars behind its single point of light.
