The Eta Aquariids: When and How to Watch

Halley's Comet last passed through the inner solar system in 1986 and won't be back until 2061, but you don't need to wait that long to see it again, in a sense. Twice a year Earth crosses paths with the trail of debris it's left behind on every previous pass, and in early May that crossing produces the Eta Aquariids — fast, often leaving short glowing trails, and genuinely better from south of the equator than from most of the US.

When and where to actually watch

Our sky map lists the Eta Aquariids running April 19 through May 28, with peak the night of May 5 into the 6th — that matches the current IMO calendar's own 2026 timing closely. The radiant sits in Aquarius, and because Aquarius doesn't climb very high for northern hemisphere observers, the best show goes to the tropics and the southern hemisphere, where the radiant gets meaningfully higher before dawn. From further north the shower is still real and still worth watching, just at reduced rates, since a lower radiant means fewer of its meteors clear the horizon at all.

A ZHR of 50 — with one older number worth flagging honestly

Our sky map's own record lists this shower's ZHR at 50, and that matches the current IMO calendar and the current AMS shower calendar page. It's worth flagging that one of AMS's own older static pages, from an earlier shower list, gives 60 for the same shower instead — a small but real example of how these figures get revised over time, and how even a single authority can carry two different numbers on two different pages if one is out of date. One comet, two showers

The Eta Aquariids and the Orionids, which peak in October, share the same parent: Comet 1P/Halley. Halley's orbit is retrograde, and Earth crosses its debris stream twice a year as a result — once at the comet's descending node, in early May, which gives us the Eta Aquariids, and once at its ascending node, in late October, which gives us the Orionids. Of the two, the Eta Aquariids are consistently the stronger performer, typically described as two to three times more active than their October counterpart from the same comet. What actually makes this shower distinctive up close

At 66 kilometers per second, Eta Aquariid meteors are genuinely fast, among the quicker showers of the year, and that speed is part of why they're known for occasionally leaving a brief glowing train behind the initial streak — a faint, lingering trace along the meteor's path that fades over a second or two. It's not something you'll see on every meteor, but it's common enough with this particular shower that it's worth watching for specifically, rather than assuming every meteor looks the same. What this means for you tonight

If you're at a latitude where Aquarius barely clears the horizon, don't wait for the exact peak night and give up if clouds roll in — the active window runs from mid-April through late May, so there's real flexibility to try again on a clearer morning nearby, even if the rates will be a little lower off-peak. Check where the radiant will actually sit from your own coordinates on the Real Sky map before you commit to a direction to face. Whatever your latitude, the best single thing you can do is look before dawn rather than at midnight: the constellation Aquarius climbs highest in the hour or two before first light, and that's when the radiant is doing you the most favors. And if you genuinely have the option to watch from somewhere closer to the equator this particular May, take it — this is one of the few annual showers where the difference between a northern-hemisphere view and a tropical one is large enough to be worth planning a trip around.
