Aquarius: The Water Bearer
Aquarius is not the brightest patch of sky, but it is one of the best places to point a telescope if you want to see what happens after a star dies. Two of the finest planetary nebulae visible from Earth sit inside its boundaries, both of them the leftover shells of stars that have already finished burning.
A figure pouring water, faint but rewarding
Aquarius's two brightest stars are unusually similar to each other, which is itself a little unusual. Sadalsuud, Beta Aquarii, is a rare yellow supergiant at magnitude 2.87. Sadalmelik, the Alpha star, is also a yellow supergiant, at magnitude 2.94, sitting almost exactly on the celestial equator. Skat, a blue-white star at magnitude 3.27, rounds out the brightest trio. None of these will overpower a light-polluted sky, so Aquarius rewards patience and darkness more than most. Its best month is October.
Ganymede, and an older water god before him
The Greek version identifies Aquarius with Ganymede, the beautiful youth Zeus carried up to Olympus to serve as cupbearer to the gods, permanently pouring drinks for immortals.
The Babylonians drew a related but distinct figure in this part of the sky: GU.LA, the Great One, a god pouring water from a jar, connected to the rainy season and to Ea, the god of the waters. The water-pouring image predates the cupbearer story by a long stretch, and it is worth noticing that both traditions land on essentially the same action, even if the character holding the jar changes.
What a dying star actually looks like up close
The Helix Nebula, NGC 7293, is one of the closest planetary nebulae to Earth, which is exactly why it rewards a closer look: proximity means more visible structure. The Saturn Nebula, NGC 7009, earns its name from side lobes that give it a genuinely ringed appearance in a telescope, a small echo of the planet it is nicknamed after. Aquarius also holds M2, a rich and bright globular cluster, a very different kind of object entirely, a dense ball of old stars rather than the expanding remains of a dead one.
Two Aquariuses, and only one of them is made of stars
Aquarius the constellation is this specific figure with its water jar, its stars, and its fixed boundaries on a star chart. Aquarius the zodiac sign is a completely different kind of object: a thirty-degree slice of the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasonal calendar rather than to this star pattern's actual position in the sky. The two used to sit closer together, and precession, the slow drift caused by Earth's wobbling axis, has been pulling them apart for thousands of years, the same mechanism behind every zodiac constellation's slow slide out of step with its namesake sign. What this means for you tonight
If Aquarius appears in your chart, that placement is the tropical sign, not this water-jar figure, so treat them as two separate facts about your night sky, not one. Go find the constellation in October anyway; it is faint enough that a genuinely dark site matters more here than for almost any other zodiac constellation on this list. Once you have located Sadalsuud and Sadalmelik, notice that the "first" star, Sadalmelik, is actually the fainter of the two by a small margin — a good habit to build before you assume Greek letters track brightness in any constellation you look at.
