Cygnus: The Swan
Cygnus flies straight down the brightest part of the summer Milky Way — one stretch of the ecliptic and galactic bands that cross the sky — and it does it in the shape of a cross. Most people who learn this constellation learn it first as the Northern Cross, and only later realize the cross is a swan with its wings spread and its neck stretched forward.
The swan's tail is a star so distant its light is genuinely old news
Deneb, at the tail of the swan and the top of the Northern Cross, is a blue-white supergiant sitting roughly 1,400 light-years away. That is a genuinely remote distance for a naked-eye star. Most of the stars you can see without a telescope on any given night are dramatically closer, which means the light reaching your eyes from Deneb tonight left the star long, long before recorded history as most people think of it began. Despite that distance, Deneb still shines at magnitude 1.25, bright enough to anchor the whole cross, which tells you just how enormous and luminous the star actually is to be visible at all from so far away.
Sadr, a yellow supergiant, sits at the center of the cross where the wings meet the body. Aljanah, also called Gienah, is an orange giant marking one wing. And at the swan's beak sits Albireo, a gold-and-blue double star that is a genuine favorite target for anyone pointing even a small telescope skyward, since the color contrast between the pair is immediately obvious even at low magnification.
A black hole and a nebula shaped like a continent both live here
Cygnus holds the North America Nebula, NGC 7000, a large emission nebula whose glowing gas genuinely traces a shape people recognize as the outline of the continent, visible in wide-field astrophotography. Nearby drift the lacy filaments of the Veil Nebula, NGC 6960 and NGC 6992, the visible remains of an ancient supernova that already tore itself apart and expanded into the delicate, threadlike shape astrophotographers chase today.
Cygnus X-1 is the constellation's most historically significant resident: it was one of the first objects ever identified as a black hole, a discovery that helped turn black holes from a theoretical curiosity into a real, observed category of object.
The swan is either a disguised god or a grieving friend, depending who tells it
The most common version has the swan as a disguise of Zeus, who took the bird's form to approach Leda. Some tellings instead make the swan a man named Cygnus, a friend of Phaethon who was transformed into a swan while mourning him and was set among the stars afterward. Both versions share the same core image, a swan flying along the river of the Milky Way, which fits the constellation's actual position better than almost any other myth-to-sky match in the whole catalog.
Chinese sky lore reads Deneb and its surrounding stars as the Magpie Bridge, a crossing over the Milky Way where the Cowherd, Altair of Aquila, and the Weaver Girl, Vega of Lyra, are allowed to meet only once a year, on the night of Qixi. It is a genuinely different story from the Greek swan, but it uses the exact same river-of-stars geography, since Cygnus sits right where Altair and Vega are visible on either side of the Milky Way's band.

Cygnus is a northern constellation, best seen in September, when it rides high overhead in the evening, comfortably placed along the brightest stretch of the summer Milky Way.

Look overhead on a September evening for a cross of four moderately bright stars laid over the pale band of the Milky Way. The star at the top of that cross, brighter than the rest, is Deneb, and it is worth pausing on the fact that the light hitting your eyes left that star roughly 1,400 years before it reached you, which is a genuinely strange thing to think about while standing in your own backyard.
