Aquila: The Eagle

Aquila flies straight along the Milky Way's brightest stretch, which is a good trick if you're an eagle: you get to be the one bird actually flying through the river of stars rather than just watching it from the bank. Its lead star, Altair, is close enough and spins fast enough that astronomers can measure the actual distortion in its shape.

Zeus's eagle, and the boy it carried to Olympus

Aquila carries two separate jobs in Greek myth. It is the eagle that carried the thunderbolts of Zeus — a fitting bird for the king of the gods to keep close. It is also the bird that bore the youth Ganymede up to Olympus, a different kind of errand, carrying a person rather than a weapon. Both roles put the same eagle in the sky, just with different cargo depending on which story you're telling.

A star kept apart from its lover once a year

Altair carries a second, unrelated identity in Chinese tradition: Niulang, the Cowherd of the Qixi love story. He is kept apart from the Weaver Girl — Vega, in the neighboring constellation Lyra — by the width of the Milky Way itself, and the two are reunited only once a year, crossing a bridge formed by magpies. It's worth sitting with how literal that story is about the sky: two bright stars really do sit on opposite banks of the Milky Way's bright band, and the tale explains that real gap rather than ignoring it.

The star that's close enough to actually study

Altair, Alpha Aquilae, sits at magnitude 0.76 and is one of the nearest naked-eye stars to us, as well as a corner of the Summer Triangle it shares with Vega. It is also a fast-spinning white star — spinning quickly enough that its own rotation measurably flattens its shape, something only possible to detect because Altair is close enough for that level of detail to be resolvable at all. That's a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say about a star you can point to with your finger: most stars are far too distant for anything but their overall brightness and color to be measured from Earth.

Tarazed, Gamma Aquilae, is an orange bright giant at magnitude 2.72, sitting close to Altair in the pattern and forming a noticeable little line with it. Alshain, Beta Aquilae, is a yellow subgiant at magnitude 3.71, noticeably fainter than its two neighbors and easy to lose if the sky isn't dark enough.

One quiet deep-sky stop

Aquila doesn't carry a long list of deep-sky trophies, but it does have NGC 6709, a scattered open cluster sitting in the Milky Way's glow — a modest binocular target rather than a showpiece, in keeping with a constellation that's really about its one bright lead star and the river of stars it flies through. Like most open clusters, how much of it resolves depends heavily on light pollution and the Bortle scale at your own observing site.

Finding Aquila in your own sky

Aquila sits on the celestial equator rather than firmly in the northern or southern sky, which means it is visible from most inhabited latitudes on Earth at some point in the year. Its best month is August, when it rides high alongside Lyra and the rest of the Summer Triangle.

What this means for you tonight

Find Altair by locating the Summer Triangle first, then picking out the corner that sits lowest and closest to the Milky Way's bright band running through it — that's Altair, with Vega up and to one side. Because Aquila straddles the celestial equator, it's one of the more forgiving constellations to try from almost anywhere on Earth, north or south, so don't assume you need a specific hemisphere to catch it.
