The Ecliptic and Galactic Bands: Two Lines Across the Sky
Two soft lines cut across the sky map, and it would be easy to assume they're doing the same job. They're not. One of them is the entire scaffolding your zodiac sign sits on. The other is just the galaxy you happen to live inside, rendered honestly and left alone.
The Zodiac band: the ecliptic, with the signs built in
In the "Show" section of the control rail, one toggle is labeled Zodiac band. Turn it on and a faint great circle appears, wrapping all the way around the sky — this is the ecliptic, the Sun's own apparent path across the year, the line every planet in the solar system stays close to because they all orbit in roughly the same flattened plane. The band carries thirty-degree tick marks around its full circumference, dividing it into twelve equal segments, and each segment carries its zodiac glyph sitting at the midpoint.
Those glyphs are clickable. Tap one and it opens that sign's card: its meaning, its element and modality, its traditional ruler, its Sun-transit date range, and — genuinely useful — which planets are currently sitting inside that sign, live, based on whatever moment the map is set to. The Zodiac band is the one place on the sky map where the tropical zodiac becomes visible as a shape rather than just numbers on a table. The galactic band: always there, never a toggle
The second line is different in almost every respect. It traces the plane of the Milky Way itself — the flattened disc of our own galaxy, which our own location inside puts on view edge-on as a hazy band across the sky. Our page renders it as a soft procedural glow rather than a sharp line, brightest where you're looking straight along the galactic plane and fading out toward the galactic poles, with a bit of built-in patchiness so it doesn't read as one flat, uniform strip.
Two things make it fundamentally different from the Zodiac band. First, it's oriented using the galaxy's own real coordinates — the north galactic pole's actual position in the sky, not an artistic guess — so its tilt relative to the rest of the sky is astronomically accurate. Second, and more simply: there's no toggle for it anywhere in the control rail. The galactic band always renders, alongside the horizon ring and the ground plane, as one of the handful of things on this page you cannot switch off. Unlike the ecliptic, nothing about it is clickable — it carries no glyphs, opens no cards, and isn't part of the chart engine at all. It's atmosphere, not data.
Why these two lines aren't parallel, and why that's normal
Because the ecliptic tracks the solar system's own flattened orbital plane, and the galactic band tracks the much larger structure of the Milky Way, the two circles cross the sky at different angles entirely — there's no reason the plane your planets orbit in should line up with the plane your galaxy is shaped like, and it doesn't. Watching both bands on the map at once is a fast way to feel the difference between "the neighborhood the planets share" and "the galaxy the neighborhood happens to sit inside."
It's also worth knowing what the galactic band is not, precisely because it's the most atmospheric-looking thing on the page: the drifting cosmic haze and particulate texture you may notice elsewhere in the scene are separate mood effects, not astronomical data of any kind, and shouldn't be read as real nebulae or dust the way the galactic glow itself is read as a real structure.

Turn the Zodiac band on and find whatever glyph your Sun sign lives at — then trace the band with your eye all the way around and notice how it tilts relative to the softer galactic glow crossing it at a different angle. That single visual, both bands on at once, is the fastest way to internalize that your zodiac sign is about the Sun's seasonal path around Earth, not about which part of the wider galaxy happens to be glowing behind it.
