Puppis: The Stern

Puppis is a fragment. Not metaphorically — literally cut, on purpose, from a much larger constellation that used to sprawl across a huge stretch of the ancient sky. What's left is still worth finding on its own.

One ship, cut into three

Puppis represents the stern of Argo Navis, the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts in Greek myth. Argo Navis, as the ancients drew it, was enormous — too big to work as a single practical constellation once astronomers started trying to map the sky systematically. In the 1750s, Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille split it into three separate pieces: Carina, the keel; Puppis, the stern; and Vela, the sails. Puppis kept Argo's original Greek star-letter designations rather than getting a fresh set assigned to it, which is why it has no Alpha or Beta of its own — those letters went to other parts of the old ship when the split happened.

That's a genuinely unusual situation. Most constellations name their brightest star Alpha and work down from there. Puppis skips straight to letters further down the Greek alphabet, a small, permanent trace of the fact that this constellation used to be one-third of something much bigger.

The hottest and coolest of Puppis's bright stars

Naos, designated Zeta Puppis, is an extremely hot blue O-type supergiant at magnitude 2.25 — among the more luminous stars visible to the naked eye, and a genuinely different kind of object from most of what you'll find nearby. Ahadi, designated Pi Puppis, is an orange supergiant at magnitude 2.71, cooler and dimmer than Naos but still a serious star in its own right. Between the two of them you get a useful side-by-side lesson in how differently stars can burn: one blazing hot and blue, the other orange and comparatively gentle, both large enough to earn the "supergiant" label.

A stretch of the Milky Way packed with clusters

Puppis sits along the Milky Way's band, and it shows. M46 is a rich open cluster with a planetary nebula sitting in front of it in the same line of sight — two different kinds of object that happen to overlap from our vantage point. M47 is a brighter, looser open cluster nearby, an easier target for a first look. M93 rounds it out as a smaller, more compact open cluster. Three clusters, three different textures, all inside one piece of a broken-up ancient ship.

The rest of the ship

If Puppis has you curious about the two other thirds of Argo Navis, Carina holds the keel and Vela holds the sails — both cut from the same original constellation, in the same 1750s reorganization, and both worth locating alongside Puppis if you want the full shape of the ship the ancients actually imagined.

What this means for you tonight

Puppis is best placed in February and rides through the southern sky along the thick part of the Milky Way, which makes it a genuinely rewarding binocular target once you find it — clusters like M46 and M47 show up as distinct fuzzy patches even without much magnification. Start with Naos at magnitude 2.25, the brighter of Puppis's two named stars at a gap of nearly half a magnitude over Ahadi, and a good anchor point before you go hunting for the clusters nearby. If you're mapping out the whole former ship in one sitting, locate Puppis first, then work outward toward Carina and Vela to see how the three pieces actually fit together across the sky.
