Scutum: The Shield
Scutum is small and easy to miss, but it sits in one of the richest stretches of Milky Way visible from Earth, and that's the whole reason it's worth finding. This is a shield, not a beast or a hero — and unlike almost every other constellation, it wasn't named for a legend. It was named for a war.
A king's victory, mapped into the sky
Johannes Hevelius coined this constellation in 1684, calling it Scutum Sobiescianum — Sobieski's Shield — to honor King John III Sobieski of Poland after his 1683 victory at Vienna. That battle stopped an Ottoman siege of the city and became one of the defining military moments of the era. Hevelius, working from Poland, put it in the sky as a lasting tribute.
That makes Scutum unusual among the 88 constellations: it's one of the few named for an actual, datable historical event rather than a myth passed down from antiquity. There's no ancient story to tell here, and there doesn't need to be. A political tribute mapped onto stars is its own kind of interesting history, and it's the real one.

Because Scutum rides through such a rich part of the galactic disk, the background star field itself is part of the show. Even before you find the named clusters, the sheer density of faint stars behind Scutum is denser than most of the sky around it — a good reminder that the Milky Way isn't evenly spread across the whole dome above you.
That density is actually the whole reason Hevelius had something to point at in the first place.
