Sagittarius: The Archer

Every other constellation in this series points at something out in the depths of space. Sagittarius points at the middle of our own galaxy. When you find this constellation and look toward it, you are looking straight through the crowded core of the Milky Way, toward the supermassive black hole that everything else in the galaxy quietly orbits.

The archer aiming at the heart of the galaxy

Sagittarius is drawn as a centaur, half man and half horse, pulling back a bow. Its brightest star, Kaus Australis, is a blue giant at magnitude 1.85. Nunki, a blue main-sequence star at magnitude 2.05, follows close behind. Several of Sagittarius's brighter stars form a recognizable shape nicknamed the Teapot, which is the part most people actually spot first before they ever untangle the rest of the archer. Sagittarius's best month is August, when it sits well up in the southern sky after dark.

An archer with a much older ancestor

The Greek version has Sagittarius as a centaur drawing his bow toward the heart of the neighboring Scorpion, and some traditions identify him specifically as Crotus, a wild son of Pan credited with inventing archery itself.

That figure did not start with the Greeks. The Babylonians already had a centaur-like archer here, the god Pabilsag, shown drawing a bow on boundary stones long before Greek astronomy took shape. The bow-drawing centaur is one of the more durable images in the whole zodiac, carried forward largely intact across two very different civilizations.

Why this patch of sky is so busy

Point anything, even modest binoculars, into Sagittarius on a dark August night and you will run into something interesting fast. The Lagoon Nebula, M8, is bright enough to catch with the naked eye under good conditions, a genuine star-forming nebula rather than a faint telescopic curiosity. Nearby sits the Trifid Nebula, M20, visibly split into sections by dark lanes of dust running across it.

And behind all of that, hidden from direct view by intervening dust and gas, lies Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole sitting at the exact center of the Milky Way. Every star in our galaxy, including the Sun, is in a very long, very slow orbit around that point. Sagittarius happens to be the constellation we are looking through to get there.

The archer in the sky and the archer in your chart are not the same thing

Sagittarius the constellation is this specific centaur, these specific stars, fixed on a star chart with real boundaries. Sagittarius the zodiac sign is a thirty-degree slice of the tropical zodiac, tied to the calendar and the seasons rather than to the archer's actual position. The two lined up more closely millennia ago. Precession has been sliding the constellations backward relative to the tropical zodiac's fixed points ever since, and Sagittarius has drifted along with the rest of the zodiac band. What this means for you tonight

If Sagittarius shows up somewhere in your chart, that placement belongs to the tropical sign, not to this literal group of stars, so do not expect the constellation to sit in some symbolically meaningful spot when you go find it. Go find it anyway, in August, low in the southern sky after full dark. Locate the Teapot shape first; it is the easiest handhold into the rest of the figure. Then, once you have it, take a slow moment to notice that you are not just looking at a random patch of stars. You are looking straight down the length of our own galaxy's disk, toward the crowded, glowing middle of it, and everything you can see with your naked eye in that direction is closer to the true center of the Milky Way than almost anything else visible from Earth.
