Ophiuchus and the Thirteenth Sign That Never Was

Every few years, a version of the same headline goes viral: NASA changed your zodiac sign, there's a secret thirteenth sign, everything you thought you knew is wrong. Two things are true at once here, and the tension between them is exactly what makes the story spread. The Sun genuinely does pass through Ophiuchus every year. Your sign genuinely did not change. Neither one is spin. They're just answers to two different questions.

Ophiuchus is a real constellation, and the ecliptic really does run through it

Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, sits between Scorpius and Sagittarius, and its official IAU boundary is large enough that the Sun's path really does cross through it every year, spending roughly 18 to 19 days inside it, from around November 30 to December 18. For comparison, the Sun spends only about 7 days inside Scorpius under the same modern boundaries. That's not a rounding error, it's a real feature of the constellations along the ecliptic: they are wildly unequal in size, because they were never drawn to be equal in the first place, they were drawn to match wherever ancient sky-watchers happened to see recognizable shapes.

The Real Sky map's own lore file actually calls Ophiuchus "the thirteenth constellation the Sun passes through each year," and that's an accurate description of exactly this fact. Ophiuchus is fully present on the map as a constellation, clickable, with its own myth and its own lore card, exactly like any of the twelve zodiac constellations.

The tropical zodiac is a different kind of object entirely, and it cannot gain a thirteenth sign

Here is the part that resolves the apparent contradiction. The tropical zodiac most Western astrology uses, including the one this page's chart engine computes, is not a map of constellations at all. It's an exactly equal, twelve-fold division of the ecliptic, thirty degrees per sign, anchored to the equinoxes and solstices rather than to any star pattern. Aries starts at the spring equinox by definition, full stop, regardless of which constellation happens to sit behind the Sun at that moment, and that equinox point itself is slowly carried around the real constellations by precession, not fixed to them. Because the system is built on even geometric division rather than on the actual, unevenly-sized constellations, it is structurally incapable of acquiring a thirteenth sign no matter how many real constellations the ecliptic physically touches. Ophiuchus being a real constellation the ecliptic crosses and the tropical zodiac having exactly twelve signs are not competing claims. They're true statements about two different kinds of thing, a constellation and a sign, that happen to share the same patch of sky and nothing else.

The chart engine on this page reflects that distinction exactly: it computes sign placement as ecliptic longitude divided cleanly into twelve 30-degree segments, with no thirteenth option anywhere in the system, while the constellation layer separately and correctly draws Ophiuchus as one of its 88 clickable figures. Both are right. Neither contradicts the other.

The viral story traces to one real NASA post, not a new discovery

The "NASA added a thirteenth sign" story isn't fabricated out of nothing, and it isn't recent, either. It traces to a real NASA post titled "Constellations and the Calendar," published on NASA's Tumblr on September 20, 2016. That post explained, correctly, that the ancient Babylonians had actually identified thirteen zodiacal constellations along the ecliptic but deliberately excluded Ophiuchus so their calendar system would divide evenly into twelve months, and that the constellations themselves are wildly different sizes, so the Sun lines up with Virgo for as long as 45 days but with Scorpius for only about seven. It was written as a piece of children's astronomy education, explicitly distinguishing astronomy from astrology, and it stated plainly that NASA studies astronomy, not astrology, and doesn't decide anyone's star sign. A NASA spokesperson later put it even more bluntly to a reporter: we didn't change any zodiac signs, we just did the math.

That single 2016 post has resurfaced as breaking news more than once since, most notably again in July 2020, when outlets including Time ran corrections describing it explicitly as a periodically recurring misconception rather than a new event. NASA's current, general-audience Space Place page about constellations, last substantively updated in December 2022, no longer contains any of that zodiac or Ophiuchus discussion at all, it only retains a general astronomy-versus-astrology distinction. If you see the "NASA's constellations page" cited as the source for the thirteenth-sign story today, that citation is pointing at the wrong, now-silent URL. The actual source is the 2016 Tumblr post, and it has never been retracted, because nothing in it was wrong.

A genuine minority does use a thirteen-sign system, and it's a different thing again

There is a real, if small, thirteen-sign tradition, distinct from both mainstream tropical and mainstream sidereal astrology. It traces to astrologer Steven Schmidt's 1970 proposal and was popularized by Walter Berg's book "The 13 Signs of the Zodiac," a bestseller specifically in Japan, where the idea went on to surface in Japanese pop culture. That approach is explicitly a sidereal variant, built on the real, unequal constellation boundaries rather than on equal 30-degree divisions, and it remains a minority practice even among sidereal astrologers, who are themselves a minority relative to tropical practitioners in the West. It's a genuine, coherent tradition. It's just not what NASA's 2016 post was describing, and it's not what this page's chart engine implements anywhere.
