Delphinus: The Dolphin
Most constellations require a little faith to see the figure in the name. Delphinus doesn't. It's a small, tight diamond of stars just east of Altair, and it genuinely reads as a dolphin arcing up out of the Milky Way.
The dolphin that helped a god get married
In the Greek myth, Poseidon sent a dolphin to track down the sea-nymph Amphitrite and convince her to become his queen. The dolphin succeeded, and Poseidon set it among the stars in gratitude. The same constellation is also linked to a second story — the dolphin that carried the poet Arion safely to shore after he'd been thrown overboard by pirates. Both stories share the same core: a dolphin doing something genuinely helpful, and getting rewarded with a permanent place in the sky for it.
Both stories share something else too: dolphins come off as fundamentally decent in Greek myth, which is a rarer trait than you'd think for animals that get mythologized. Most sky-creatures are there because they're dangerous, monstrous, or hunted. This one's up there because it did somebody a favor.
Delphinus shows up outside Greek tradition too. In Chinese astronomy, its stars were shared among smaller asterisms belonging to the Black Tortoise of the North, including ones called the Good Gourd and the Rotten Gourd — a completely different way of grouping the same points of light, with no dolphin in sight.
The joke hiding in the names of its brightest stars
Rotanev, the dolphin's brightest star at magnitude 3.62, is a close binary star. Sualocin, at magnitude 3.78, sits right beside it. Read those two names backwards and you get "Nicolaus Venator" — the Latinized name of a 19th-century astronomer who apparently couldn't resist signing his own name onto the sky while cataloging it. It's one of the few star names in the entire catalog that exists purely as a private joke that stuck. Gamma Delphini, at magnitude 3.9, rounds out the dolphin's brightest points and is an attractive double star for anyone with a small telescope.
What makes the joke work is that nobody caught it for a long time. Star names get inherited from old catalogs without much scrutiny, and Sualocin and Rotanev sat there looking like they belonged to some ancient or Arabic naming tradition, the way most traditional star names do. It took someone actually noticing the backwards spelling to catch what had happened — a small, almost accidental piece of graffiti that outlasted its author by a couple of centuries.
A cluster tucked deep in the dolphin's body
NGC 6934 is a compact globular cluster about 50,000 light-years away, sitting within Delphinus's small boundaries. It's not a naked-eye object, but it's a satisfying telescope target once you've already located the dolphin shape and want a reason to linger there a bit longer.
What this means for your own sky tonight
Delphinus is best placed for viewing in September from the northern hemisphere, and it's genuinely one of the easier small constellations to actually recognize, since the shape does resemble its name. Use bright Altair as your starting point — Delphinus sits just to its east, distinct enough from the surrounding stars that you shouldn't need a chart for more than a minute once you know where to look. Altair itself belongs to neighboring Aquila, if you want to work outward from there.
If you're checking how star brightness works to calibrate what you should expect to see, note that every named star in Delphinus sits between magnitude 3.6 and 3.9 — tightly clustered, which is part of why the diamond shape holds together so cleanly instead of one star dominating and the rest fading out. And if the idea of the same stars meaning something completely different to different cultures is interesting, that's worth remembering the next time you look at any figure on the sky map — the shape you're taught is one choice among several that history actually made.
Once you've got the diamond locked in, try tracing it slowly rather than all at once. Because the four brightest stars sit so close together in brightness, your eye has to do more of the work than it does with a constellation built around one dominant point, and that slower process of tracing is usually what makes a shape stick in memory instead of blurring together with everything else nearby.
