Constellation Lines and Labels: What Each Toggle Draws

The stick figures connecting stars into a hunter, a bear, or a scorpion aren't official astronomy at all — they're a visual convention, one of many possible ways to connect the same dots. Our sky map draws one specific set of them, gold linework across the whole sky, and exactly two toggles decide how much of it you see.

Two toggles, two different things

In the "Show" section of the control rail, two of the seven buttons govern constellations specifically: Constellations and Names. They aren't the same switch wearing two labels. Constellations controls whether the stick-figure linework renders at all — turn it off and the lines connecting the stars vanish entirely, star field and planets untouched. Names controls a separate layer: small text labels floating near each figure's anchor point, readable at a glance without having to trace the lines yourself. You can have lines with no names, names with no lines, both, or neither.

Names defaults to on only above roughly 900 pixels of screen width — on a phone-sized viewport it starts off, presumably because 88 overlapping labels get crowded fast on a small screen. Constellations itself starts on regardless of screen size.

What actually gets drawn

All 88 IAU-recognized constellations ship with stick-figure line segments, and every single one is drawn from the same underlying data used to power the lore cards — there's no constellation on the map that's missing its story or vice versa. The lines render as one continuous gold line drawing across the whole sky, and hovering your pointer over any single figure brightens just that one, lifted slightly above the rest, so you can tell at a glance which shape you're about to click.

Worth knowing: our page draws the classic connect-the-dots patterns, not the constellations' true boundaries. Officially, since 1930, every constellation is actually defined by a fixed polygon of sky — an area with hard edges, decided independently of which stars anyone draws a line between. A star can sit inside the boundary of a constellation without being anywhere near its stick figure. Our map doesn't ship that boundary data at all; only the figures and their label anchor points exist here. One more honest quirk in the data: Serpens is the single constellation split into two disconnected pieces on the sky, its head on one side of Ophiuchus and its tail on the other. Our map draws both halves as separate line features, but they resolve to one single lore entry when you click either one — there's only ever one Serpens card, no matter which half you clicked.

How a click actually finds the right constellation

With 88 overlapping figures crisscrossing the whole sky, precisely clicking a thin line would be nearly impossible if the page relied on hitting the visible line pixel-for-pixel. It doesn't. Underneath the visible gold linework, the page maintains an invisible mesh of slightly widened ribbons following every segment, wide enough to register a click made anywhere reasonably close to a line without needing pixel accuracy. Click near any figure — the visible line itself never receives clicks directly — and the invisible ribbon underneath resolves which constellation you meant and opens its lore card: translation, hemisphere, best month, a short summary, brightest stars, deep-sky objects, and either a myth or the real story of whichever 16th-to-18th-century astronomer invented it. Clicking a name label does exactly the same thing as clicking the figure itself.

That lore card is also where the honest brightness disclaimer lives — our own data doesn't always put the brightest star at the alpha position, so how star brightness works is worth reading before you assume "Alpha" means "brightest" for any given figure.

What stays fixed no matter what you toggle

A couple of things on the sky are never affected by either toggle. The horizon ring and the ground plane beneath it always render — there's no way to hide the horizon. Named individual stars are also never clickable on their own; only the constellation lines and their labels are pick targets, so if you want a specific star's identity, you'll find it inside the constellation's lore card rather than by clicking the star directly.

Turn Names off for thirty seconds and try to identify one constellation by shape alone, using only the gold linework — then turn Names back on and see how close you got. It's a genuinely useful way to test whether you actually know a shape or you've just been reading the label next to it, and it's the fastest way to notice how differently the same 88 patterns read once the crutch of text is gone.
