Cassiopeia: The Queen
There is a lopsided W hanging in the northern sky that hardly ever disappears. Once you have traced it, Cassiopeia is one of the easiest constellations to relocate on any clear night, because for most of the northern hemisphere it never actually sets.
The W is made of three stars close in brightness, plus one that will not stay still
Schedar, Caph, and Gamma Cassiopeiae are the three brightest stars forming the queen's zigzag. Schedar is an orange giant. Caph is a yellow-white pulsating star, meaning it physically swells and shrinks on a regular cycle. Gamma Cassiopeiae is the more unpredictable of the three: a hot, rapidly spinning variable star that can, at times, flare brighter than either of the other two, which is unusual for a star that does not have a formal proper name the way Schedar and Caph do.
That spin and irregular flaring make Gamma Cassiopeiae genuinely interesting to track over multiple nights if you want to see a star visibly change brightness with nothing but your own eyes and patience.
There is a cluster shaped like an owl, and it is exactly as fun as it sounds
Cassiopeia sits inside the Milky Way's band, so it comes with a run of open clusters worth seeking out. M52 is a rich open cluster, dense enough to reward binoculars. M103 is smaller and less crowded, a quieter cluster nearby.
The standout is the Owl Cluster, NGC 457, an open cluster whose stars form a shape people genuinely see as an owl, or sometimes as a little stick figure with two bright "eyes" staring back through the eyepiece. It is one of those deep-sky objects where the nickname is not a stretch.
The myth is a story about vanity with real consequences
Cassiopeia was the queen of Aethiopia, and her boast about her own beauty is what doomed her. She claimed to be more beautiful than the sea nymphs, an insult the sea god did not let go, and the fallout eventually threatened her daughter Andromeda. As punishment, Cassiopeia was bound to her throne, fixed to circle the celestial pole for the rest of time, which means she spends half of every single night hanging upside down as the sky turns.
Chinese star maps looked at the same stars and saw something else entirely. These stars were split across asterisms including Wangliang, read as a famous charioteer, and Gedao, a raised walkway leading up to the sky palace. Neither figure has anything to do with a queen or a throne. It is the same pattern, read two ways, by two civilizations that never compared notes.
Where and when to look
Cassiopeia is a northern constellation, and its best month is November, when it climbs to a comfortable evening height rather than sitting low near the horizon. Because it is close to the pole, most observers in the northern US and Europe can find it circling around Polaris, the pole star anchoring Ursa Minor, on almost any clear night of the year, not just in November. November is simply the month it is at its most convenient and highest.
It also sits roughly opposite the Big Dipper, the seven-star pattern belonging to Ursa Major, across the pole star, so if the Dipper happens to be low on a given night, Cassiopeia is usually riding high, and vice versa.
What this means for you tonight
Find Polaris first, then look for a wide, uneven W or M shape on the opposite side of the pole from wherever the Big Dipper currently sits. If it is late in the night, the W may look tipped on its side or even upside down, and that tilt is not you misreading the shape, it is the queen's actual bound position doing exactly what the myth describes as the sky rotates around her.
