Canes Venatici: The Hunting Dogs

Right below the curve of the Big Dipper's handle, there's a small dim patch most people scan straight past. That's Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs — and it happens to be holding one of the most photographed galaxies in the sky.

Two dogs, one leash, no ancient story

Johannes Hevelius put this constellation together in 1687, gathering up faint stars that had never been assigned to a figure. He named the two dogs Asterion and Chara and gave them to Boötes, the herdsman standing right next door, imagining him holding their leash as they chase the two bears — Ursa Major and Ursa Minor — around the pole.

There's something almost domestic about that image compared to the rest of the northern sky. Most of what's up there is fighting something, fleeing something, or being punished for something. This is just a herdsman out with his dogs, doing an eternal job that never really resolves into drama. It fits the era it was made in — Hevelius wasn't trying to compete with Perseus and the sea monster, he was filling in the practical gaps left in older sky charts.

That's the whole origin story, and it's worth saying plainly: Canes Venatici has no ancient myth. It's a 17th-century invention, drawn by a working astronomer filling in the gaps of the northern sky the way Plancius and Lacaille did elsewhere. The star named after a king's heart

Cor Caroli, the constellation's brightest star at magnitude 2.89, means "Charles's Heart." It's a blue-white double star, easy to split even in modest optics. Chara, the constellation's other named star, is a much dimmer sun-like yellow star at magnitude 4.24. The gap between the two — over a full magnitude — is why Cor Caroli reads as the obvious anchor point when you're scanning this part of the sky and Chara barely registers. Why this faint patch is a galaxy-hunter's stop

Canes Venatici holds three genuinely great deep-sky targets. The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is a face-on spiral with a small companion galaxy tucked against one of its arms — it's the textbook image of what a spiral galaxy looks like, viewed almost straight on. M3 is a brilliant globular cluster packed with roughly half a million stars, dense enough to look like a single glowing ball in binoculars. And the Sunflower Galaxy, M63, shows off tightly wound spiral arms that live up to the nickname.

None of these are visible to the naked eye, but with even a small telescope from a reasonably dark sky, this unassuming little constellation punches well above its weight.

That's the general pattern with most of the modern, invented constellations. They didn't get the bright, mythologized stars — those had already been claimed by older figures — so what's left tends to be dim on the surface and interesting underneath, once you actually point something at it. Canes Venatici is a particularly good example of that trade: nothing to see with your eyes alone, plenty to see once you bring equipment.

What this means for your own sky tonight

Canes Venatici sits highest and best placed for viewing in May from the northern hemisphere, and it's a good test of whether your sky is dark enough for faint hunting. Start with the Big Dipper's handle, drop down, and look for Cor Caroli — at magnitude 2.89 it should be visible even from a moderately light-polluted yard, and it's your anchor for everything else nearby.

If you can hold Cor Caroli steady in binoculars but Chara disappears, that's your own personal gauge of how much your local light pollution is costing you. Try the same test again on a trip somewhere darker and see how much more of the constellation shows up — it's one of the more honest ways to notice what city skies actually take from you.
