The Alpha Capricornids: When and How to Watch

Five meteors an hour, on a good night, is not a lot. It's the kind of number that would make most people skip a shower entirely and wait for something bigger. The Alpha Capricornids ask you to skip that instinct, because the handful of meteors they do produce are some of the slowest, brightest fireballs you'll see from any annual shower all year.

When and where to watch

Our sky map lists the Alpha Capricornids running July 3 through August 15, with peak the night of July 30 into the 31st, which matches the current IMO calendar's timing. The radiant sits in Capricornus, close enough to the celestial equator that this is one of the rarer showers that plays about equally well from either hemisphere — you don't need to be north or south of anywhere in particular to get a fair view.

A ZHR of 5, and why the exact number moves around

Our sky map's own figure for this shower is a ZHR of 5, and that matches the current IMO calendar and AMS's current shower page. It's worth knowing that an older AMS list gave 4 for the same shower, which is a small, largely cosmetic difference rather than a real disagreement — showers this modest tend to have their figures nudged by a point here and there as more data comes in, and 4 versus 5 meteors an hour isn't the kind of gap that should change how you plan a night outside.

Slow, bright, and yellow — the actual reason to bother

What makes the Alpha Capricornids worth mentioning at all, despite the low count, is speed: their meteors travel at around 23 kilometers per second, genuinely slow compared to most other showers, some of which run three times faster. A slower meteoroid burns up over a longer stretch of its path through the atmosphere, which tends to produce a longer-lasting, more visibly bright streak rather than a quick faint flash — and this shower has a real reputation for producing fireballs with a distinctly yellow cast as a result. You won't see many. The ones you do see are disproportionately memorable.

A short-period comet, unlike its richer cousins

The parent here is Comet 169P/NEAT, a short-period comet, which puts the Alpha Capricornids in more familiar company than showers like the Quadrantids or Geminids, whose parents are asteroids rather than active comets. It's a useful shower to hold onto as the "normal" case: a modest annual stream shed by a real, currently orbiting comet, doing exactly what the textbook description of a meteor shower says it should.

What this means for you tonight

Because this shower peaks in the same last week of July as the Southern Delta Aquariids, it's worth watching both on the same night rather than treating them as separate trips — you'll see far more total meteors that way, and telling the two apart is straightforward once you know to look: Alpha Capricornid meteors will be the noticeably slower, longer, brighter ones among the faster Aquariid streaks. Since five an hour under ideal conditions is already a low bar, don't try this from anywhere with real light pollution — check the Bortle scale for what your own sky actually supports, and if it's Class 6 or worse, this is a shower to save for a trip somewhere darker rather than a backyard attempt.
