Virgo: The Maiden

Point a telescope almost anywhere inside the outline of Virgo and there is a real chance you have found a galaxy. Not one galaxy. Potentially one of over a thousand, all crowded into roughly the same patch of sky. That is not a metaphor about the constellation being important. It is a literal description of what is physically out there.

The maiden reclining across a field of galaxies

Virgo is the second-largest constellation in the sky, sprawling across a big stretch of the spring evening. Its anchor star is Spica, a hot blue giant and the brightest thing in the constellation at magnitude 0.98, bright enough to find even from a city. The name is often translated as "the ear of grain," and that is precisely the detail that survives across every version of this figure: a maiden holding a stalk of wheat, marked by that one bright star.

The second-brightest star, Vindemiatrix, is a yellow giant at magnitude 2.83, considerably dimmer than Spica and easy to overlook once you have found the main star. Virgo's best month to look is May, when the constellation climbs high enough to study properly.

Two harvest goddesses, one wheat stalk

Greek and Roman tradition does not settle on a single identity for Virgo. Sometimes she is Astraea, the goddess of justice, and her departure from the earth at the end of the mythical Golden Age is said to have left the scales of justice behind her, which is why Libra sits right next door. Other tellings make her Demeter, goddess of the harvest, which fits the wheat stalk in her hand even more directly.

Babylonian sky lore reaches the same field by a different road. These stars were the Furrow, holding an ear of barley, and connected to the goddess Shala. It is genuinely striking how consistent the wheat imagery is across two separate traditions that did not necessarily influence each other directly, and it is one of the reasons Spica has kept its "ear of grain" meaning for so long.

What is actually inside the Virgo Cluster

The signature deep-sky object here is the Sombrero Galaxy, M104, an edge-on spiral with a wide, dark dust lane cutting across it that gives it its name. It is one of the more photogenic galaxies visible from Earth, precisely because we are seeing its disk from the side.

Nearby sits M87, a giant elliptical galaxy that made history as the first galaxy whose central black hole was ever directly imaged. And around both of them lies the Virgo Cluster itself, the nearest large cluster of galaxies to our own, with over a thousand members. Virgo's robes, in the old imagery, are filled with more galaxies than most people will ever comprehend at once.

Why the constellation and the sign have drifted apart

Virgo the constellation is a specific arrangement of stars with fixed boundaries, the kind an astronomer can point to on a star chart. Virgo the zodiac sign is a thirty-degree wedge of the tropical zodiac, defined by the seasons rather than by any star pattern. They started out roughly aligned, thousands of years ago, and precession has been sliding them apart ever since, the same slow drift responsible for pulling every zodiac constellation out of step with its namesake sign. What this means for you tonight

If Virgo shows up in your chart, remember that the placement is astrological Virgo, the seasonal slice, not the constellation you are about to go find. Go find the constellation anyway. In May, look for Spica low in the southeast after dark, a single steady blue-white point brighter than anything nearby, and then try to trace the fainter outline of the maiden extending up and to the left from it. If your sky is dark enough and you have even modest binoculars, sweep slowly around the region north of Spica; you are sweeping through the edge of the Virgo Cluster, and every faint smudge you catch that is not a star is very likely a galaxy tens of millions of light-years away.
