The North Node: The Point With No Body

Click every glowing globe on the sky map and you'll eventually find one row on your placements table that doesn't match any of them. It has a glyph, a sign, a house — everything else a body gets — but no sphere waiting for you in the sky to fly toward. That's the North Node, and the gap is not a bug. It never had a body to give it in the first place.

A crossing, not a thing

Our own observatory notes describe it exactly this way: not a body, a crossing point — specifically, where the Moon's path climbs north across the ecliptic. The Moon doesn't orbit Earth on the exact same plane the Earth orbits the Sun; its orbit is tilted a few degrees relative to that plane, which means the two paths cross at two points on opposite sides of the sky. The North Node is the one where the Moon is heading upward through the ecliptic plane, from south to north. The opposite crossing, where it heads back down, is the South Node — and our chart engine doesn't compute that one at all. Only the North Node appears here.

That crossing point matters astronomically for one very concrete reason: eclipses only happen when the Sun and Moon meet up near the nodes. A new Moon most months passes above or below the Sun in the sky and nothing happens; a new Moon that lands close to a node lines up all three bodies well enough to cast a shadow, and you get an eclipse. The North Node isn't a mystical construct bolted onto astronomy — it's the specific geometry that decides when eclipses are even possible, the same underlying phases and quarters covered at moon phases explained.

How our engine actually computes it, and the choice that implies

There are two conventions astrologers use for locating the node: the Mean Node, a smoothed average that always drifts steadily backward through the zodiac, and the True Node, which tracks the real, slightly wobbly crossing point and can occasionally pause or even creep forward for a few days. Our engine uses the Mean Node, computed from a polynomial formula, and describes it in its own code comments as "the Mean Node most chart sites report" — a plain acknowledgment that this is the more common convention, not a claim that it's the only correct one.

Because the Mean Node moves by definition, our chart always marks it retrograde. But it's worth noticing what our reading layer does with that flag: everywhere else on the chart, a retrograde marker triggers a specific reading about turning inward and revisiting rather than launching something new. The North Node is deliberately excluded from that note. Since it never moves any other way, calling it retrograde tells you nothing useful about it — our own composition logic skips the retrograde line for this one placement specifically, which is a small, honest piece of engineering. Growth, direction, and a reading with real history behind it

Our chart reads the North Node as your growth-edge — the unfamiliar direction your life keeps asking you to walk. That framing, the North Node as growth and the (uncomputed, on our page) South Node as the past you're releasing, is the dominant modern reading, closely tied to twentieth-century evolutionary and psychological astrology. It is not the only way the nodes have ever been read. In the older Hellenistic tradition, the nodes carried different names — the Ascending Node and Descending Node — and were treated chiefly as significators of fortune, good or bad, rather than as a soul-purpose roadmap. Both readings are real traditions; they simply come from different centuries and different underlying philosophies about what a chart is for. Where to find it, and why it doesn't count toward the balance

The North Node shows up on your placements table with its own glyph, sign, and Whole Sign house, exactly like the ten real bodies above it. That's a second small honesty choice worth knowing — the node gets a placement and a reading, but it doesn't get a vote in what your chart's overall elemental tilt looks like.

The North Node can also form aspects to other placements using the same five angles as every other body, and if it does, it will surface in your aspects list like anything else — just remember, when you see it there, that the point on the other end of that line was never a planet to begin with.

What this means for you tonight

Find the North Node row on your placements table, note its sign and house, and then ask yourself honestly whether the direction it describes feels familiar or genuinely uncomfortable — traditionally, discomfort there is treated as the whole point, not a sign you're reading it wrong. You won't find anything to click on in the sky itself tonight for this one; there's no globe waiting at the end of that line, only the invisible math of where the Moon's path happens to be climbing north through the plane Earth traces around the Sun.
