Musca: The Fly

Right beside the Southern Cross, one of the most recognizable shapes in the entire sky, sits a small constellation with a considerably less glamorous name: the Fly. It has no story, no hero, no rescue. It's just a fly, drawn in by navigators who were busy filling in a genuinely blank part of the sky and apparently ran out of more dignified ideas.

It started out as a bee, not a fly

Musca has no mythology, and the actual history behind its name is a little stranger than most of the other 16th-century inventions in this stretch of sky. It's one of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman's southern constellations from around 1598, and it wasn't drawn as a fly to begin with. It was first drawn as a bee, Apis, and only later fixed into its current identity as Musca, the Fly. Nobody involved left behind a record of why the switch happened. It's just one of the small, unresolved details that survive in a 400-year-old star chart, the kind of loose thread that reminds you these constellations were drawn by working navigators, not committees carefully checking their choices against each other.

The stars that hold the fly together

Alpha Muscae is the brightest, a hot blue-white star at magnitude 2.69, traditionally read as the fly's heart. Beta Muscae follows at magnitude 3.05, a close blue-white binary — two stars locked together closely enough that they read as one point of light without a telescope. Delta Muscae, an orange giant, comes in at magnitude 3.62. The three sit close enough together in brightness that Musca reads as a coherent small shape once you've located it, even if none of them individually would grab your attention from across the sky. The dark ribbon that cuts across it

Musca holds three real deep-sky targets. The Dark Doodad Nebula is a long, thin ribbon of dark dust that threads across the constellation — not a glowing object at all, but a lane of obscuring material that blocks the starlight behind it, visible as a dark streak against the brighter Milky Way background. NGC 4833 is a globular cluster sitting near Beta Muscae, and the Hourglass Nebula, catalogued as MyCn 18, is a planetary nebula etched with a genuine hourglass pattern in its structure — a dying star's outer shell, shaped by physics into something that looks deliberately drawn.

Musca is a southern constellation, best viewed in May, and it sits directly beside the Southern Cross, Crux, and near the sprawling ship's-keel constellation Carina. If you've already found the Cross, Musca is the small shape immediately south of it, close enough that once you know it's there, you'll likely never scan past that part of the sky again without noticing it.

Its neighbors are some of the richest, most photographed real estate in the entire southern sky, which makes Musca an easy constellation to overlook by comparison. But that proximity is also what makes it worth the extra look. You're already pointed at the right part of the sky whenever you're admiring the Cross or tracing Carina's long keel; Musca is simply the next stop over.

Why it still counts as an official constellation

A shape this small and this unglamorous still gets exactly the same status as a legendary hero under the modern system: a bounded region with a fixed boundary, no more and no less. What is a constellation covers how the IAU settled that question for all 88 regions, Musca included.

What this means for you tonight

If you're south of the equator in May, find the Southern Cross first — it's genuinely unmistakable — and then look immediately south of it for a small, tight cluster of three moderately bright stars. That's Musca, and Alpha Muscae at magnitude 2.69 should be your first target. If your sky is dark and steady enough, look for the Dark Doodad's faint dust lane threading through the same area; catching it is a good personal benchmark that you're observing from a sky dark enough to see structure, not just points of light.
