The Moon is the one chart body you can watch change shape in real time, night after night, without any equipment at all. It is also the only body whose most famous moment, the full Moon, is a piece of astrology and astronomy at once: an exact geometric alignment that happens to also be gorgeous to look at.
The Moon takes 29.53 days to return to the same phase
The Moon's orbit around Earth actually takes about 27.3 days, measured against the fixed stars. But the phase cycle you actually see, new Moon to new Moon, takes longer: about 29.53 days. The gap exists because Earth itself is moving around the Sun while the Moon orbits Earth, so the Moon has to travel a little further than one full orbit to catch back up to the same Sun-Moon-Earth angle. Along the way the Moon passes through eight named phases: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, and waning crescent. Four of those, new, first quarter, full, and last quarter, are the principal phases, each one marking a specific angle between the Sun and Moon: 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees of ecliptic longitude apart. A full Moon is literally an exact opposition aspect
Here is the moment astronomy and astrology overlap without any interpretation required. A full Moon happens exactly when the Sun and Moon sit 180 degrees apart on the ecliptic, as seen from Earth. That is not a coincidence of language. It is the same geometry our chart engine flags as an opposition, one of the five classical aspects laid out in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos alongside conjunction, sextile, square, and trine. Every full Moon you have ever watched rise as the Sun set was an opposition aspect playing out in real time, whether or not anyone in the room called it that. Why the Moon never shows up as retrograde
Like the Sun, the Moon is hard-excluded from our engine's retrograde check. Retrograde motion is a comparison between Earth's orbital speed and another body's, the visual effect of one overtaking the other on the racetrack of the solar system. The Moon does not orbit the Sun independently the way a planet does; it orbits Earth, and Earth carries it along.
