Hercules: The Hero (Hercules)
Hercules is one of the biggest constellations in the sky, and also one of the easiest to walk right past, because nothing in it is especially bright. That makes it a good test case for a rule that trips people up constantly: the star lettered Alpha is not automatically the brightest one.
A big northern shape, best found in the middle of summer
Hercules takes its name from the Roman form of Heracles, and its genitive, Herculis, is what attaches to each star name here: Beta Herculis, Alpha Herculis, and so on. It sits in the northern sky and reaches its best viewing in July, which puts it up during exactly the season when its faintness works against it most, competing with short, bright summer twilight rather than the long dark of winter.
The brightest star in Hercules isn't the one lettered Alpha
Kornephoros, Beta Herculis, is a yellow giant at magnitude 2.78, and its name means club-bearer. It is, in fact, the brightest star in the whole constellation. Rasalgethi, Alpha Herculis, sits at magnitude 3.1, noticeably fainter despite carrying the Alpha designation. The Greek letters were assigned by later astronomers using their own criteria, not always strictly by brightness, and Hercules is one of the clearer examples of that mismatch. Rasalgethi visibly changes brightness while you watch
Rasalgethi is not just fainter than Kornephoros, it is also a huge red giant that genuinely varies, swinging between roughly magnitude 2.7 and 4.0 over time. Its name means the head of the kneeler, which is a fitting label for a star sitting at the top of a kneeling figure. Zeta Herculis, meanwhile, is a much steadier nearby binary at magnitude 2.81, pairing a Sun-like star with a fainter companion.
Before he was Heracles, the Greeks just called him the Kneeler
The figure here is the hero Heracles, shown kneeling with one foot resting on the head of the neighboring constellation, Draco. Before that identification stuck, the Greeks simply called the shape Engonasin, meaning the Kneeler, without attaching it to any specific hero. Only later did it become fixed as Heracles and his Twelve Labors, once the story and the shape had time to merge.
M13 is the finest globular cluster the northern sky has to offer
The Great Hercules Cluster, catalogued as M13, is widely considered the best globular star cluster visible from the northern hemisphere, faintly visible to the naked eye under a dark sky and dramatic through even a modest telescope. M92 nearby is another bright, dense globular cluster, often overlooked simply because it shares a constellation with something more famous. Further out, Abell 2151, known as the Hercules Cluster, is a rich, distant grouping of galaxies rather than stars, a genuinely different kind of object hiding under a very similar name.
That naming overlap is worth sitting with for a second: two different objects, a star cluster and a galaxy cluster, both informally called the Hercules Cluster depending on which one someone means. It is a small reminder that the plain-language names attached to deep-sky objects were never designed as a tidy, unambiguous system the way the official 88 constellations were.
What this means for you tonight
Hercules sits best in July, and because it is genuinely dim, the trick is to build outward from its brightest point rather than scanning for an obvious shape. Start with Kornephoros rather than assuming the brightest star you see must be the one lettered Alpha; that habit will serve you in other constellations too. If your sky is dark enough, try for M13 as a faint, slightly soft point rather than a sharp star; that softness is the entire tell that you have found a cluster and not just another dim star in a dim constellation.
If you have a few weeks to spare, come back to Rasalgethi more than once and note how it looks each time. Because it swings between roughly magnitude 2.7 and 4.0, a careful comparison against Kornephoros nearby, which holds steady, is enough to notice the change over time without any special equipment at all. Watching a star actually get fainter or brighter over successive nights, rather than reading about the fact secondhand, is a different kind of understanding than any chart can give you.
