Equuleus: The Little Horse (The Foal)
There's a constellation smaller than almost every other one in the sky, tucked right beside a much more famous horse, and most people who could see it have never noticed it's there. That's Equuleus.
Two different foals, and nobody's fully sure which one
The myths attached to Equuleus are thin, and the lore itself is honest about that. In one version, this is Celeris, a swift foal and brother of Pegasus that the messenger god Hermes gave to Castor. In another, it's Hippe, a daughter of the centaur Chiron who was transformed into a mare and hidden among the stars. Neither story dominates the tradition the way, say, Perseus and Andromeda's story does for their constellations. Equuleus gets a faint myth for a faint constellation, and that pairing feels almost fitting.
Neither version gives you a dramatic scene to picture, which might be exactly why this constellation never became a household name the way its neighbor Pegasus did. A winged horse leaping across the sky is an easy image to hold onto. A foal who is either a messenger's gift or a transformed centaur's daughter, depending which ancient source you trust, is a much harder one to fix in your head — and that vagueness followed the constellation right into the modern era.
The second-smallest shape in the entire sky
Equuleus is the second-smallest of all 88 constellations, beaten only by Crux, the Southern Cross. There's no deep-sky object catalogued inside it at all — no nebula, no cluster, no galaxy worth a telescope stop. What it has is three faint stars and not much else, which is exactly why it gets skipped over by casual sky-watchers even on genuinely clear nights.
Size, on a constellation chart, doesn't mean the area covered by visible stars. It means the area of the sky assigned to that constellation's boundary, whether or not anything bright happens to be inside it. Equuleus drew a small boundary because there wasn't much nearby worth including — a tight little patch that just barely holds together as its own recognizable figure rather than getting absorbed into Pegasus next door.
The stars that are actually there, if you look closely
Kitalpha, Alpha Equulei, is the only named star in the constellation, at magnitude 3.92 — a close pair made up of a giant and a Sun-like star. Delta Equulei, dimmer at magnitude 4.47, is a binary with one of the shortest visually resolved orbits known, meaning its two component stars swing around each other on a timescale short enough to actually notice change within a human observing career. Gamma Equulei, at magnitude 4.69, is a white star that varies slightly in brightness. None of these are naked-eye slam dunks. What this means for your own sky tonight
Equuleus is best placed for viewing in September from the northern hemisphere, sitting right beside the much larger, much brighter Pegasus — find Pegasus first, since its Great Square is unmistakable, and Equuleus is the faint little foal's head crowded just west of it. This is genuinely one of the better tests of how dark your sky actually is: if you can pick out Kitalpha at magnitude 3.92 without strain, you're looking at a reasonably dark sky. If you can't find it at all even knowing exactly where to look, that's useful information about your own light pollution, not a failure on your part.
Given how few faint constellations get any real attention, what is a constellation is worth reading if you want to understand why a shape this small and this dim still gets an official boundary and a permanent place on the chart, same as Orion.
There's a small satisfaction in finding a constellation precisely because it's hard, rather than because it's obvious. Most people who tap through a sky map spend their time on Orion, the Dipper, the showpieces. Equuleus rewards the opposite instinct — go find the one nobody else bothered with tonight, and you'll actually remember exactly where it is next time.
