Crater: The Cup
Next to the crow sits the cup that crow was supposed to bring back full. Crater is faint, it has no cluster or nebula of its own to point a pair of binoculars at, and its whole reason for existing in the sky's story is that Corvus failed to do a very simple errand. It is also a clean example of what a constellation really is: a boundary drawn around a pattern, not a promise that the pattern will be bright.
The cup only makes sense next to the crow that carried it
Crater's myth is not really its own. It is the other half of the story told about Corvus: Apollo sent his crow out with a cup to fetch water, the crow got distracted by unripe figs, and it came back late with an empty cup and a lie about a snake blocking the way. Apollo placed all three players in the sky as a permanent record of the failure — the crow, the snake it blamed, and the cup it never filled. Crater is that cup. It has no separate legend, no second reading from another culture. It exists in the sky purely as evidence in someone else's story.
Labrum is the brightest star, and it does not carry the Alpha
Crater's three named stars complicate the idea that the Alpha star is always the leader. Labrum, designated Delta Crateris, is an orange giant at magnitude 3.56, and it is the brightest star in the whole constellation. Its name literally means "the lip," a fitting label for the rim of a cup. Gamma Crateris is a white star at magnitude 4.06 with a faint companion riding beside it. Alkes, Alpha Crateris, is another orange giant at magnitude 4.08, and its name translates to "the cup" itself. So the star carrying the constellation's own name, and the Alpha designation to go with it, is actually the faintest of the three. Labrum, tucked away at Delta, is the one doing the real work of being visible. How star brightness works is worth reading if that ordering surprises you, since it happens more often across the sky than most casual guides let on.
There is nothing else here to point a telescope at
Crater has no listed deep-sky objects at all, no cluster, no nebula, no galaxy worth naming. That is unusual compared to a lot of its southern neighbors, and it fits the shape's whole character. This is a quiet, faint pattern that exists to complete someone else's story rather than to hold anything spectacular of its own.
That absence is part of what makes Crater worth including at all. Not every one of the 88 official shapes was drawn around a bright star or a dramatic object. Some were drawn simply because the sky needed dividing up completely, boundary to boundary, and a faint stretch of stars near a more famous neighbor still needs a name and a home. Crater is a good reminder that the map is complete rather than curated: every patch of sky belongs to something, even when that something is four unremarkable stars shaped like a goblet.
What this means for you tonight
Crater comes to its best in April and sits deep in the southern half of the sky, so it rewards a genuinely dark, unobstructed view to the south rather than a glance through streetlight glare. Start with Corvus first, since the crow is a tighter, easier-to-spot box of stars, and Crater sits right alongside it as the fainter, wider goblet shape. Once you have found Corvus, look for Labrum rather than reaching for the star labeled Alpha; Labrum at magnitude 3.56 is noticeably easier to catch than Alkes at 4.08, even though Alkes is the one that literally means "the cup."
Because nothing in Crater is going to jump out at you the way a bright cluster would, this is a good constellation to check your own sky's honesty on first. Look up light pollution and the Bortle scale and see roughly where your own backyard falls; a faint magnitude 4 star that is easy from a rural field can vanish completely under a suburban sky, and Crater is entirely made of stars in that range. If the whole shape feels invisible from where you are standing, that is very likely your sky, not your eyes.
