Chamaeleon: The Chameleon
There's no legend attached to Chamaeleon, no god who got turned into a lizard as punishment or reward. It's simpler than that. Sailors saw a chameleon, and when they got around to charting the sky they hadn't seen from Europe, they put one in it.
Mapped by explorers, not inherited from myth
Chamaeleon comes from the same source as several other far-southern constellations: the voyages of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman around 1598, later charted by Johann Bayer in 1603. It depicts the actual animal — a real, color-changing lizard the explorers had presumably encountered or at least heard described — rather than a figure borrowed from classical storytelling. It has no ancient myth, and it was never going to get one; it's a product of the age of exploration mapping the sky the same way it was mapping the rest of the globe.
Three faint stars, close in brightness
Chamaeleon's stars sit within a tight range of each other, none of them commanding. Alpha Chamaeleontis is the brightest, a white star at magnitude 4.06. Gamma Chamaeleontis, a red giant, follows at magnitude 4.11. Beta Chamaeleontis, a blue-white star, comes in at magnitude 4.24. That's three stars within about two tenths of a magnitude of each other — a faint, evenly matched little cluster rather than one star running away with the shape.
There's no deep-sky object listed inside Chamaeleon's borders. Like Caelum, it's a constellation defined entirely by its stars and nothing else, which fits a figure this small and this close to the pole.
That's a different kind of faint than Sextans or Antlia, where at least a galaxy waits behind the dimness for anyone with a telescope. Chamaeleon offers no such consolation. What you see with your eyes, more or less, is what you get. The appeal here isn't a hidden object — it's the novelty of finding a shape this close to a pole most people never think to look toward.
Close to the point everything spins around
Chamaeleon sits near the south celestial pole, the point the far-southern sky appears to rotate around over the course of a night — the southern equivalent of what Polaris does for the north, though Chamaeleon itself isn't the pole star, just a near neighbor to it. That proximity to the pole means it's effectively invisible from most of the northern hemisphere, no matter what time of year you try.
An April constellation, for southern skies only
Chamaeleon is a southern-hemisphere constellation with a best month of April. Given how close it sits to the pole, it's circumpolar for a wide swath of southern latitudes, meaning it never fully sets — it's simply higher and easier to see in April than during the rest of the year.
What this means for you tonight
If your Real Sky map location is southern hemisphere, April is your best shot at Chamaeleon riding high enough to pick out clearly. Look for that tight trio — Alpha, Gamma, and Beta Chamaeleontis, all within a couple of tenths of a magnitude of each other — near the south celestial pole, and don't expect one star to jump out at you; this is a constellation where all three points matter about equally. If you're set north of the equator, don't bother searching.
